What Is Ihsan for Kids?
When someone does something well, we often say: “Ahsanta!” (Well done!). But what does it really mean?
- Linguistically: Ihsan means doing something good in the best possible way — performing an action with excellence.
- Islamically: Ihsan means “to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you.” Every action a Muslim does sincerely for Allah becomes an act of worship.
Ihsan in the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked about Ihsan, he said:
«أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فإنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فإنَّهُ يَرَاكَ»
“It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, indeed He sees you.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, Hadith 50, Sahih)
To make this easy for children: Imagine a gardener working while the owner watches him closely the entire time. The worker knows that his payment depends on doing his job well. Naturally, he will do his best.
Similarly, the Prophet ﷺ taught us that true Ihsan means living life with the awareness that Allah is always watching us — even if we cannot see Him in this world, we will see Him in the Hereafter.
The Levels of Ihsan
From the hadith, scholars have explained that Ihsan has two levels:
- The First Level: Worship Allah as if you see Him. This is the highest level, where the believer feels the greatness of Allah and works with deep sincerity.
- The Second Level: Worship Allah knowing that He sees you. This is a lower level but still a reminder that Allah is aware of everything we do, even if we forget.
A Story About Ihsan
Stories help kids understand better. Here’s one:
One man shared that he was walking home on a cold night and saw a banana seller waiting for his last customer. Out of kindness, he wanted to buy bananas to help him. But as he approached, another young man arrived with the same intention — not because he needed bananas, but to relieve the seller’s hardship.
The man was amazed: “SubhanAllah, Allah sent not just one, but two people at the same time to help him.”
The next day, he noticed the banana seller secretly putting bananas into a cleaner’s bag for free. This showed that Allah helps the people of Ihsan by sending others to be kind to them too.
Conclusion
Ihsan teaches children (and adults) that every action counts when done sincerely for Allah. Whether it’s prayer, kindness, helping parents, or even smiling at someone, doing it with excellence brings them closer to Allah.
